How To Install Gondola Shelving: Step-by-Step Retail Guide

Gondola shelving is not only strong and durable but also extremely flexible. Featuring a modular design, it can be easily assembled without bolts or nuts.

Everything you need to get your retail display ready usually comes in the package, except for a few basic tools like a rubber mallet and a level. Learning how to assemble gondola shelving is straightforward, but accuracy is key for a safe commercial environment.

This guide will help you understand how it works and show you how to build it fast.

Supermarket Gondola Installation Steps

Step 1 – Build the Upright Posts

Start with the skeleton of your unit. Whether you are building a standalone bay or a long run, you need to assemble the posts first. Attach the base legs (shoes) to the upright posts. You should hear a solid click. If the fit is tight, lightly tap the legs into place with a rubber mallet to ensure they are fully seated and secure.

Step 2 – Install the Bottom Rail

Position your two posts (with legs attached) approximately 4 feet apart (or the width of your shelf). Insert the bottom rail into the lowest slots on the inside of the posts. This rail locks the width of the bay. If the tabs don't slide in easily, check that your posts are straight and try again—force should not be necessary.

Step 3 – Slide in the Back Panels

While one person holds the posts steady, slide your back panels (pegboard or solid steel) down the grooves of the uprights. Start with the bottom panel and work your way up. Ensure the paint side (finish side) is facing out towards the customer. Installing the back panels early helps stabilize the structure before you add more weight.

Step 4 – Secure with the Top Rail

Once the panels are in, snap the top rail into the slots immediately above the top panel. This locks the entire frame together. Then, check the structure with a level. The base legs usually have adjustable feet—use a wrench to adjust them until the unit is perfectly vertical on your floor.

Step 5 – Install the Kick Plate and Base Shelf

Snap the kick plate (front cover) into the base legs first. Crucial Note: You must install the kick plate before the base shelf; otherwise, you will have to lift the heavy base shelf again to fit it in. Once the plate is on, place the base shelf directly onto the legs until it sits flush.

Step 6 – Add the Upper Shelves

Now it's time to configure your display. Insert the shelf brackets into the upright slots at your desired heights, ensuring they are level on both sides. Place the metal shelves onto the brackets. Your gondola shelving is now ready for merchandise!

Is the assembly process the same for all gondola systems?

Generally, yes. Most major brands of gondola shelving (like Madix or Lozier style) follow this universal “Post-Rail-Panel” logic. However, always check if your specific unit requires a top cap or center spanner bar for extra stability, especially for wall units that exceed standard heights.

Tips for moving faster when assembling gondola shelving for your store

Plan and measure beforehand Don’t wait until the freight arrives to clear your floor space. Measure your aisles to ensure you have at least 36-40 inches of clearance for shopping carts. If you are setting up a new store layout, mark the floor with tape where each gondola run will start and end.

We also recommend laying the posts and rails flat on the ground to double-check you have all components before standing them up. This simple step prevents halfway-point interruptions.

Constructing a shop with gondola shelves doesn’t have to be complicated. It really comes down to a straightforward process: planning your store layout, choosing (or customizing) your brand shelves, and finally, installing the supermarket gondolas.

Whether you are setting up a small retail store or upgrading a large supermarket chain, these fixtures offer the versatility and efficiency you need to maximize your sales floor.
